Why Xeriscape Makes Sense in Utah
Utah is one of the driest states in the country, and in a typical yard the lawn is where most of the water goes. Every summer, homeowners along the Wasatch Front pour water into keeping cool season grass green through heat it was never suited for. Xeriscape flips that math. Instead of fighting the climate, the landscape is designed for it: plants that want to live here, irrigation that wastes almost nothing, and rock and structure that look good with no water at all.
What xeriscape is not, at least not when it is done well, is a sea of gravel with three sad shrubs. That look gave water wise landscaping a bad name. Every xeriscape starts on paper. We map sun, shade, and slope, then group plants by how much water they actually need, so the irrigation can be dialed to zones instead of soaking everything equally.

Choose Plants That Belong Here
Native and adapted species are the backbone. They are built for dry summers and cold winters, so they thrive where a thirsty imported palette would struggle, and they bring color and texture through the seasons.

Install Drip Irrigation
Water goes to the root zone of each plant, drop by drop, on a schedule matched to the zone. It is the difference between watering plants and watering air.

Layer the Rock and Structure
Decorative rock, boulders, and defined bed lines give the yard its bones. Rock also shades the soil, slows evaporation, and keeps the design looking intentional in every season, even when nothing is blooming.

Xeriscape Questions, Answered
Does xeriscape mean getting rid of all my grass?
No. Xeriscape means designing the landscape around water smart choices, not stripping it bare. Many designs keep a smaller, purposeful lawn area or swap it for synthetic turf, then surround it with native and adapted planting, decorative rock, and drip irrigation.
Will a xeriscaped yard look bare or rocky?
Not the way we design it. Gravel with three shrubs is not xeriscape, it is just gravel. A real xeriscape layers plant heights, textures, boulders, and rock so the yard looks rich year round, including through the dry stretch of a Utah summer.
How does xeriscape save water?
Two ways. Plant selection favors native and adapted species that are built for a dry climate, so they simply need less. And drip irrigation delivers water at the root of each plant instead of spraying it into the air, so almost nothing is lost to evaporation or overspray.
